Screening in the 3rd trimester

Fetal well-being scan at 30 – 32 gestational weeks

Fetal well-being scan is usually carried out between 30-32 weeks, but it can be also performed later up to the term. Its main aim is to evaluate fetal growth, however there are other aspects which are examined at the same time.

During fetal well-being scan in the 3rd trimester we examine for you:

  • Placental location
  • Amount of amniotic fluid
  • Biparietal diameter of fetal head, head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length and calculate the fetal weight
  • All fetal organs
  • In case of reduced fetal growth we add Doppler examination of placental and fetal circulation

During the scan, we will keep you informed about the parts of fetal anatomy displayed on the screen. If you wish to see the real image of your future baby, you can ask us to add a 3D-4D scan. We would be happy to include this imaging option for you.
In case of significantly reduced fetal growth we would add Doppler examination of placental and fetal circulation and other tests. These tests will help us to establish possible cause and severity of reduced fetal growth.

At the end of the scan we will share with you fetal weight and describe growth on charts in the computer. In case of reduced fetal growth we explain its probable cause, severity of situation and suggest further management.

The whole examination with counselling takes around 30 minutes and you are welcome to bring your partner or someone close to accompany you through the examination. You will obtain two printed images of your baby and a detailed report with results will be sent to you by email within a week.
